Why Worry About Phlebotomy Certification Online?

What is the big deal about phlebotomy certification online? Why can’t you just take a course and find a job? You can, actually, as there is no law banning entry level workers from finding a job as a phlebotomist and doctor’s assistant. However, you’re unlikely to be hired, as employers usually look for individuals who have had proper training in phlebotomy work.

The work involves not only taking blood, but also related tasks such explaining the procedure to patients, updating new patient records, cleaning and sterilizing the equipment, sending blood and other bodily fluids to labs for testing, and taking blood pressure, pulse and respiration rate.

That said, why should you get certified since this is not legally required? Because it elevates you to a higher caliber of worker. This is what your employers want. In fact, phlebotomists will tell you that it’s almost impossible to get a job without certification nowadays. For that matter, if you are living in California or Louisiana, then you will have to certified and licensed in order to work with blood.

What phlebotomy certification does is let your future employer know that you have met all existing criteria and taken an exam showing your know-how in this field. Certification is handed down by respected organizations. Many feel that certification is even better than licensing, since you can cross state lines and still be viewed as a certified phlebotomist. The good news is that you can find a school that offers phlebotomy certification online!

To do so would require working with a school that is accredited and that develops curriculum around the standards of the top three agencies for phlebotomy: the National Phlebotomy Association, the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the Association of Phlebotomy Technicians.

Completing a school course doesn’t automatically give you certification. You must seek certification afterwards, unless the school offers certification as part of its package. Usually phlebotomy certification requires a high school diploma, 40 classroom hours, 120 hands-on training hours, and 100 successful blood collections without nurse assistance. The hands-on training is paramount, as you must learn this procedure and do it flawlessly, in order to protect yourself and avoid injuring patients—leaving the hospital open for malpractice lawsuits.

Classroom training focuses on anatomy, physiology as well as the right way to extract, process and handle specimens. For more on this exciting and stable career look up schools that offer phlebotomy certification online along with an accredited name and reputation and excellent, in-depth curriculum.
